Donna Jo Napoli is the author of many award winning books including Zel, The Prince of the Pond, The King of Mulberry Street, and the recent Hush.

 

Afternoon Speaker

 

Marge Bruchac

 

Marge Bruchac, an Abenaki Indian, is a scholar, storyteller, and historical consultant whose work is to disseminate accurate representations of northeastern Native people.

 

 

 

Cost is $115 per person, $95 for members of VLA, VT-NEA or Friends of DCF

1.       Introducing the New DCF List                                                                                                  Sally Margolis & the DCF Committee

Come and "meet" the books on the 2008-2009 DCF list as reviewed by committee members. Find out what the Rapid Review handout doesn’t cover! Sally Margolis is a former DCF chair.

 

2.       Creative Drama to Help DCF Novels Come Alive!                                                                Joan Robinson

Joan Robinson will lead participants in creative drama activities that create engaging book talks and discussions. The fun activities will help students imagine themselves in the settings and as characters of novels nominated for the 2008-09 DCF Award. A former children’s librarian, Joan Robinson currently serves on the education staff of the Flynn Center for Performing Arts.

 

3.       Boys and Books – Getting Middle Schoolers Interested in Reading                                Angelika Mahoney

Angelika Mahoney, Librarian at Colchester Middle School, will share a variety of strategies she has successfully used to get boys to read. You will take away a list of suggested reading materials, book titles, and genres, a sampling of which will be on display at the workshop.

 

4.       Working Partners                                                                                                                      Donna Jo Napoli and Wendy Lamb

Donna Jo Napoli and her editor, Wendy Lamb, will talk about their editorial process, Donna Jo’s next book with WLB, and how they approach historical fiction.

 

5.       Using Fun Technology to Promote Student Engagement                                                    Pamela Burke

Using a variety of readily available applications, students can create bookmarks, flyers, comic strips, short films, podcasts and more to promote DCF books. Librarians can use similar tools to enhance their booktalks. We’ll look at many examples and have a practical discussion about how to integrate technology into the library curriculum. Pamela Burke is the librarian and technology instructor at the Marlboro Elementary School.

 

6.       DCF as Independent Reading                                                                                                    Cathy Branon and Laurie Ely

Two teachers who have been using DCF books as a main part of their reading curriculum for the past 5 years will present samples of student work, explain how to incorporate the new DCF books into your reading programs each year, and offer hands-on project ideas to do with your own students. Cathy Branon and Laurie Ely both teach sixth grade at the St. Albans Town Educational Center.

 

7.        Booktalking  Basics                                                                                                                   Amy Howlett

Amy Howlett, Southeast Regional Librarian, will talk about her approach and demonstrate techniques, including delivery styles, disruptions, pitfalls, and tips for selecting titles. An annotated bibliography will include professional sources, websites, tips, and a list of good books to use.

9.       Creative Drama to Help DCF Non-Fiction Come Alive!                                                       Joan Robinson

Participants will experience tried-and-true ways to use creative drama to help those nonfiction titles on the 2008-09 DCF list get off the shelves. Led by Joan Robinson, former children’s librarian and current member of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts’ Education Dept.

 

10.    Bookmaking                                                                                                                                Susan Hessey

Learn several fun book structures to help DCF readers explore vocabulary, setting, characterization, story structure and theme. Each participant will go home with several models, handouts and a bookbinding bibliography. Susan Hessey is the librarian at the Guilford Central School.

 

11.    A Visit With Wendy Lamb: An Editor’s Perspective                                                           Wendy Lamb

Come chat, ask questions and share opinions with Wendy Lamb of Wendy Lamb Books, a division of Random House.

 

12.    Malian’s Song: Abenaki Oral Traditions of the French and Indian War                        Marge Bruchac

This workshop examines Native American oral traditions as important sources of knowledge on American colonial history. The book Malian’s Song depicts the 1759 raid by Major Roger Rogers on the village of Odanak, from the perspective of the Abenaki women and children who survived.

 

13.    DCF Books: Springboards for Interdisciplinary Teaching                                                Josh Keels

Using a unit based on Bread and Roses, Too, Josh will show how to use books as the basis for interdisciplinary study, and will discuss strategies to help librarians and classroom teachers partner on both content development and curricular extensions. Josh Keels teaches sixth grade at Walden Middle School.

 

14.    Never Too Old for Picture Books                                                                                            Desiree Hertz

Picture books can be used for students in grades 4-8 to promote classroom discussion, introduce curriculum units and/or provide models for a variety of writing styles. Participants should bring a book to share. Des Hertz teaches fourth grade at Burke Town School, and co-presented this workshop last year.
